Why Did Jesus Speak in Parables?

I used to wrestle with this question myself. Honestly, there were times I read the Gospels and wondered, “Why wouldn’t Jesus just say things plainly?” Even the disciples asked Him the same thing. In Matthew 13, after Jesus taught the crowds through parables, they came to Him and asked why He spoke that way.

Jesus explained that parables both reveal and conceal truth. At first, that can sound harsh or even confusing. But the closer I’ve grown to God over the years, the more I’ve started to understand what He meant. Parables expose heart posture. The people who were truly hungry for truth leaned in deeper. They stayed, asked questions, searched for understanding, and wanted more. But those who were resistant, prideful, hardened, or only listening on the surface often walked away hearing nothing more than a story.

Same words. Same message. Completely different response.

What I’ve realized is that spiritual understanding is not just about intelligence or hearing words with our ears. It’s about the condition of the heart. There were Scriptures I once read years ago that I barely understood, yet now they speak to me in an entirely different way. The Bible did not change. God did not change. I changed. As I grew spiritually, prayed more, surrendered more, and pursued God more deeply, verses that once seemed confusing suddenly carried clarity and depth. The truth was always there, but my heart was not ready to fully receive it yet.

That is why two people can hear the exact same message and walk away completely different. One person is moved while another is offended. One grows while another dismisses it. Jesus was never interested in creating shallow followers who only listened casually. He constantly invited people deeper.

The beauty of the parables is that they still do the same thing today. They reveal truth to those who genuinely seek God with humility and hunger. As Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

Maybe that was the point of the parables all along. They were never just stories. They were invitations.
