Faith & Encouragement

Life Is a Gift

Life itself is a gift.

That may sound simple, but it’s a truth I didn’t always understand. There was a season in my life when the struggles in front of me felt much bigger than the blessings around me. I was battling deep depression and carrying burdens that seemed impossible to put down. Some days felt heavy from the moment I opened my eyes. I wasn’t focused on dreams or goals or what the future might hold. I was simply trying to make it through one day at a time.

Then life brought another challenge when I became a victim of identity theft. What was already a difficult season became even more overwhelming. The stress, frustration, and uncertainty piled on top of everything else I was carrying. There were moments when I felt exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually. There were times when the darkness felt so overwhelming that I questioned whether things would ever get better. Looking back now, I can admit there were moments when I struggled to see hope at all.

What I couldn’t see then was what God was doing behind the scenes.

While I was focused on the pain, God was working on the purpose. While I was questioning the path, God was directing my steps. While I was wondering if I would ever feel whole again, God was slowly healing parts of me that I didn’t even realize were broken. At the time, I wanted Him to remove the struggle. Instead, He chose to walk with me through it.

Years later, I can see His hand in places where I once saw only hardship. I can see how He used those painful seasons to shape me into the person I am today. The depression taught me compassion for people carrying invisible burdens. The disappointments taught me perseverance. The struggles taught me to trust God even when I couldn’t understand what He was doing. None of those lessons were easy, but they became part of the foundation God was building in my life.

Today, I find myself in a place I never imagined during those difficult years. I am a published author. I have the privilege of writing devotionals, encouragement, and messages of hope for people who may be walking through struggles of their own. Sometimes I sit back and think about how far God has brought me, and it leaves me humbled. The woman who once struggled to see a future is now encouraging others not to give up on theirs.

That is why gratitude has become so important to me. Gratitude isn’t pretending life is perfect. It isn’t ignoring the hard things or pretending the struggles didn’t hurt. Gratitude is being able to look back and recognize God’s faithfulness through every chapter of the story. It’s understanding that even the seasons I would never choose had purpose. It’s realizing that God didn’t waste the pain.

When we’re focused only on where we’re trying to get, there’s always another mountain to climb, another goal to reach, another problem to solve, or another challenge demanding our attention. Gratitude invites us to pause and look behind us for a moment. It reminds us to recognize how far God has already carried us.

As I look back over my own journey, I don’t just see the hardships anymore. I see God’s faithfulness. I see His provision. I see His protection. I see His grace. Most of all, I see a God who never left my side, even when I couldn’t feel His presence.

Life is a gift—not because every moment is easy, but because God is present in every moment. The struggles taught me lessons I could not have learned any other way. They deepened my faith, strengthened my character, and gave me a story that I can now share with others who may be walking through difficult seasons of their own.

Today, I am grateful for how far God has brought me. I am grateful for the lessons learned through the hardships. I am grateful for the opportunities ahead. And I am grateful that no matter what the future holds, I can trust the One who holds it. God has already brought me a long way, and I know He will continue to guide my steps wherever the journey leads next.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

— Psalm 27:13 (NKJV)
