📖 When You Don’t Understand What God Is Doing
Daily Verse: John 13:7
“Jesus replied, ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’” — John 13:7 (NIV)
Have you ever walked through something and thought, “This makes no sense”? Not necessarily tragic, just confusing. A door closed that felt right. A delay you didn’t plan for. A season that feels sideways instead of forward. You’re trying to trust God, but quietly you wish He would explain Himself. You want clarity, not mystery.
In John 13, Jesus is washing His disciples’ feet. Peter is uncomfortable. It doesn’t align with his expectation of what a Messiah should be doing. It feels backwards. And in that tension, Jesus says something both comforting and challenging: “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” There is understanding coming — but not yet.
We struggle with the “not yet” part. We prefer immediate clarity. We want to see how the pieces connect while we’re still holding them. But sometimes obedience comes before comprehension. Peter couldn’t see the full picture in that moment. He didn’t understand that what felt confusing was part of something much larger.
If we’re honest, we live there often. We don’t understand why the opportunity didn’t work out, why the timing feels off, why the season is stretching longer than expected, or why the answer was no. We want reassurance that there is purpose behind what feels uncertain.
This verse gently reminds us that not understanding is not the same as being abandoned. God’s work in your life is not random, even when it feels unclear. There are chapters you won’t fully understand until you’re several pages ahead. Faith sometimes asks you to trust the Author before you see how the story resolves.
In today’s world, we expect answers instantly. We research everything. We analyze everything. But faith does not always come with explanations attached. Sometimes it simply asks us to keep walking. If you are in a season that feels confusing or misaligned, this is your reminder that God may be doing something you cannot yet see. And not seeing the full picture does not mean there isn’t one.
If you’re navigating a space where obedience feels clearer than understanding, I write more about that kind of steady trust in Living Faith Out Loud. Because faith often grows strongest in the in-between — when you keep following even without full clarity.
You may not realize now what He is doing. But later, you will understand.
Prayer
Lord, when I don’t understand what You’re doing, help me trust Your heart anyway. Give me patience for the “later” and confidence that You are working even when I cannot see it. Amen.
